i've just discovered that Undiscovered is actually being shown on Astro.

can't believe i paid 10 ringgit to watch it just a couple of weeks ago.

now it makes sense why we were the only ones in the cinema that day, log.

anyway, world trade center is one heck of a lousy movie.

either that or i'm one heck of an insensitive person.

the first 20 minutes of the show build up so promisingly but it falls flat just as the towers do.

you know how deceptively clever the producers are? they put the two magnificent towers on the movie poster and name the show World Trade Center to entice all us destruction lovers hoping to see a disaster being reenacted, but in actual fact it focuses on the two tiny main chracters shown sandwiched between the towers.

Nicholas Cage (with an unsightly moustache) plays a policeman who charges into the collapsing towers valiantly with his bunch of cop buddies and ends up getting stuck underneath slabs of concrete without saving a soul. That's when the movie starts going down hill as the two surviving policemen experience flashbacks of being with their wives while thinking of their death, and the wives experience flashbacks of being with their husbands while wondering why they decided to rush into a crumbling tower.

most of the film time is spent focused on Cage's dirty face as he's trapped in the rubble, and boy, his moustache is distractingly crappy.

noone sums it all up better than rotten tomatoes:
"... World Trade Center yields lovely and touching moments but proves a slow-going, arduous movie experience ..."

the only thing is, i didn't get the supposedly touching moments like jaya did (he somehow thinks the movie deserves a 5/5), which means it was just the slow-moving, arduous part i felt.

verdict: not worth going to the cinema for, but since everyone else is watching it anyway, you know you will.

one movie worth watching (more than once, even) is the devil wears prada.

i've watched it twice already, and after all the sucky movies that's been coming out lately, this was a refreshing change.

and to think i wouldn't have watched it at all if it weren't for st's high recommendations. the word 'prada' in the title of a movie just doesn't interest most of us people who have external plumbing.

anyway, it the end it was a pleasant feel-good type movie where the charming Anne Hathaway (clad in clothes picked by the Sex & the City's fashion people, mind you) gets her customary happy ending. Meryl Streep was fantastic as usually expected as well.

since i never read the commercially-successful novel by Lauren Weisberger this movie is based on, i don't know how it fares in the aspect of book-to-film adaptation. anyhow, this movie is certainly worth the price of the ticket and worth rewatching as i have done thanks to err, the internet.

on other unrelated matters, this guy did a detailed review of the 10 most used BitTorrent sites available out there, which includes my old favourites mininova and torrent spy.

but it seems that BT Junkie completely owns the rest in number of torrents indexed and daily update of torrents, which has caused me to abandon mininova and torrent spy for my torrent needs now.

oh yeah, Google bought over Youtube recently, combining the best in internet search and video for US$1.65 billion(!!), opening up a possibility-filled future. and youtube co-founders Chad and Steve talk about the acquisition and their newfound riches on, you wouldn't guess, youtube. i'll try to keep my posts shorter from now on, for a variety of reasons.. =p

finally finished both seasons of House, M.D. as well as Grey's Anatomy, two of the most popular medical TV series to have surfaced in the aftermath of shows like Chicago Hope and E.R.

Dr. Gregory House, a maverick medical genius whose comments are as famous as his hopeless bedside manner is the obvious star of House. His sarcastic one-liners and outrageous behaviour make the show thoroughly entertaining. Hugh Laurie deserved an Emmy nomination at least for his impeccable American accent alone. What's interesting is that his father was a doctor once and he said that he felt guilty for "being paid more to become a fake version of my own father" after being cast as House.

Grey's Anatomy stars Dr. Meredith Grey as a surgical intern whose life is a mess, especially in relationships where she is pathetically hopeless, IMHO.

i finished both seasons of House in one week whereas it took me around a month to finish GA, which more or less sums up how i feel about each series relatively. Generally, House is a lot more heavy on the medical side where all kinds of medical jargon will pop up more frequently whereas GA, in the words of many friends, is more sexual. Heck, the cover itself already shows two pairs of feet under a blanket.

The very first scene of GA is about sex, and almost every episode ends up with someone sleeping with somebody new who works in the same hospital. The show focuses on lead character Meredith's failed relationships, where she either gets dumped and then cries pathetically, or hurts someone then cries pathetically.

The saving grace of the show for me, is Dr. George O'Malley, who has had a crush on Meredith since kindergarten or something. He manages to make me laugh quite often.

One cool thing about GA is the amount of indie/alternative music they play (click here for list of songs used), although i feel it tends to interrupt the flow of conversation in the movie by coming on at the wrong times (contrary to what most people say). i distinctly remember Rilo Kiley's Portions for Foxes being the opening song of the first episode and making me view the show in a different light. Another cool thing is how every episode is named after a song, such as Yes' Owner Of A Lonely Heart and REM's Losing My Religion.

and i'm inexplicably attracted to the character Dr. Addison Montgomery-Shepherd played by Kate Walsh. i don't know why, maybe it's the way she is unbelievably nice or how doggedly determined she is to win her husband back.

i would like to say more on why i love House but the last episode i saw was a month ago so i can't really remember much. But my verdict is this, House trumps Grey's Anatomy hands down!

I think GA relies too much on its sexual appeal whereas House has a better plot and more intriguing medical cases (though some cases are similar in both series), and then there's Dr. House! watching soaps in a coma patient's room to escape clinical duty or playing on his Gameboy Advance SP while seeing patients, making fun of his boss' sexual identity or freeloading off a colleague and annoying the crap out of everyone, there's no one like him.

oh yeah, and then there's Dr. Allison Cameron in it as well, played by the ever-lovely Jennifer Morrison.

Boon says that she's the reason he watches House at all.

3-0 up and then a brace is scored within 10 minutes with an equaliser looking likely. a frighteningly familiar scenario for Liverpool fans indeed. fortunately, a reverse of another Turkish miracle involving the Reds did not occur.

we should've sealed it at 3-0, but a discomfortingly error-prone Pepe Reina looked out of place between the posts. anyway, what a game by Crouch!

dropped for the last couple of games, he clinically scores 2 goals with the second being "a stunning acrobatic volley into the corner of the net". remember what he tried to do in the world cup against T&T, when he received a cross in the box and tried to take it on the volley but that went horribly wide?
well, he did the same thing, only this time, it ended up nestled in the corner of the net.

i do realise i blog a lot on football, a lot on Liverpool..it's not like i don't have anything else to write about, but when interesting blog material strikes me during the day, i'll build the whole article in that grey slab of matter between my ears with a train of thoughts, then it'll leave my head long before i plant my butt in front of my com. so i end up blogging about Liverpool, cos everytime i go online, i'll check out football sites and be tempted to write something about 'em.

you know how annoying it is sometimes people ask me questions, say, about physics or any study subject for that matter, and when i say i truly DON'T KNOW the answer, they stare at me unbelievingly as if i'm some cocky, selfish jerk who simply refuses to help them..you know how frustratingly annoying that is??

when i say i don't know the answer, i'm really do-not-know-a-damn-thing-CLUELESS, okay? just because i score in tests and exams doesn't mean i know a lot, i'm the kind that doesn't hit the books until the very last minute, meaning if you ask me anything about ANYTHING anytime before test/exam period, you probably know more than i do!

i'll help if i can, but more often than not, i can't.

and when i say something truthful yet be called a liar straight in the face without a moment's contemplation, it hurts...like a dagger stabbed right at the heart, from the front, from a person you'd expect to at least consider the validity, the genuineness of what is said..

maybe i babble too much nonsense for my own good, till the thin red line separating facts from blasphemy becomes blurred, like the boy who cried wolf i guess.

couldn't be a more emphatic victory over the team that was one spot behind us last season...3-0! Kuyt scores (again!), Riise does a repeat of the thunderbolt against CSKA London during the Community Shield, and another clean sheet at home.

Life's good as a red. i mean, what better way to bounce back from two succesive defeats than 2 succesive victories at home? being the best fans in the world that we are, Anfield will become a fortress once more.

he has been a lil' down in form since the start of the season, but with that incisive through ball to Finnan in the build up to the 1st goal and the 65-yard stunner (65 yards!), the Xabi of old is definitely, absolutely back.

i'll gladly point out that the last goal he scored for Liverpool was from the centre of the field too!

Kuyt finally opened his Liverpool goalscoring account with a well taken goal, the start of many more to come from the Dutch maestro, i believe..YNWA!

Steve Jobs unveiled new iPods and iTunes 7 during Apple's Showtime event today.

The iPod now comes in 30GB and 80GB models at USD249 and USD349 respectively (which are the same old prices I think).
It's got a brighter screen and better battery life now and has got a brand new search feature.

Very handy cos I believe many users of iTunes like me frequently use its built-in searchbox to look for particularly elusive tracks. Always thought they should have had something similar in iPods. It's about time.

The "Completely Remastered" (that's their new tagline) iPod nanos now come in 5 colors with aluminium casings for a more scratch-free experience.

Just clip it on and go, the new iPod shuffle.

Supposedly the world's smallest digital music player, it's a badge of musical devotion.

The new search feature in iPods really leave me reeking with jealousy, but i have no regrets whatsoever on getting my Eleanor when I did. New tech stuff comes out every other day so it's just a matter of time before current technology becomes obsolete anyway.

whoa, another day, and another post..this is not good...

anyway, in the past week, i've had my Piano practical exam and i got back my "A"-levels results for my first term...one went well, the other was like crap.

getting my exam results reminded me how fast time was flying, and the fact that i still haven't decided on my future yet worries my parents. you know, most people have their future career laid out for them and they don't have a choice when it comes to deciding on what they want to do. i know of some friends who wanted to do mass comm but was forced into law by her parents.

i have a similar problem, but on the contrary, my parents give me the freedom to decide on what to study..the problem is, i don't know what i want.
the thing is, everything is the same to me, i don't have an inclination towards any career whatsoever.

medicine? ok lah.

aeronautical engineering? why not?

biotech? i don't mind.

actuarial science? can also.

the list goes on....
sigh...

my future's quite messed up as it is, and add to that the fact that i was lucky enough to be selected for National Service for next year.

the main reason for my optimism is the excellent signings Rafa Benitez has made: young Argie central defender Gabriel Palletta for the future, left winger Chilean Speedy Gonzales, equally speedy right winger Jermaine Pennant, and probably the speediest, striker Craig Bellamy.

Other than that, Brazilian Fabio Aurelio (go here to see his goal-scoring exploits at valencia) provides additional cover on the left and Dutch forward Dirk Kuyt is discussing personal terms with Rick Parry as i type.

Our defence and midfield was strong as it is from last season, but with the new buys we made i believe we have the squad to challenge CSKA Chelski this time around. we start off against newcomers Sheffield United tomorrow night and i don't see us not winning that tie.

Goalscorers Riise and Crouch celebrating with Liverpool's 1st trophy (of many more to come) this season.

there's a vibe going around Anfield and i can feel it, the title's coming back home this season...Number 19!!

Chelsea started practically with a full squad with Lumpard (of shit), Terry, Ballack, Essien, Sheva, Drogba, Robben all in the starting line-up. Whereas Liverpool surprised me, resting Stevie, Alonso and Bellamy while starting with Sissoko and Zenden in the center.

anyway, Sissoko had a really good game, Zenden and Gonzales wasn't convincing enough for me while Pennant didn't get enough chances. Agger, replacing Hyypia at centreback, was not bad though and Aurelio as well as Bellamy were impressive after coming on in the second half. all in all, a good win to get the season started, a season where dominance of the english game shall shift from London to the red half (more than half, actually) of Merseyside.

watched Lady In The Water with my bros on thursday. don't know when's the last time we did that together.

anyway, if you go in expecting a horror movie like i did, this is the suckiest movie you'll ever see..the scariest thing in the entire movie is a dog with gleaming red eyes.

but if you go in just to watch the movie the way it is, it's actually quite cool, definitely better than The Break-Up (what a waste of 6 bucks that was).

it's like some sort of child fantasy flick. not bad in whole, fascinating way how all the characters are linked together. and the little piano-playing smart-alec from My Wife and Kids makes an appearance as....guess what? a little boy genius who deciphers messages hidden on the back of cereal boxes.

went to pc fair this afternoon with jian and richard. crazy crowded, there were too many stalls and too many people. all i got was some blank cd-r's.
saw some ipod cases, but didn't feel like buying there and then. there were some FM transmitters too, but the nice ones were too expensive and the cheap ones looked too much like dildos.

don't think i'll go to pc fairs for some years to come. can't stand large crowds like this while shopping.

iPod War

It's like the old card game you played when you were seven because it was the only game you could understand ("War! My eight beats your two!"), but with iPods set to shuffle. Sounds lame a little, yes, but the way she explains it made me laugh.

You and a friend each set your iPod on shuffle, then listen to and compare what pops up. Whoever has 'The Better Song' gets one point. The author illustrates several vagaries to consider in judging:

-Older doesn't always mean better. "Yes, music was exceptionally rad from 1964-1982. Doesn't mean a song from 1995 can't be better."

-Don't demand a win on principle. (You say: "But the Rolling Stones kick Prince's ass!") Each song should be evaluated on its own merit. (I say: "While The Stones are an important part of music history, there are lots of Stones songs that are mediocre/sucky and some Prince songs that fucking rule.").

-Counting Crows never wins.

-If neither person will concede the win, "Vietnam" is declared (both sides claim a win, but nobody really won).

so bing finally blogged about the gig. if you haven't read his review on the concert yet, don't.

anyway,

when bing first told me that we are scientists were coming to malaysia a couple of months ago, i was so freakin excited and anxious and..and..i couldn't wait...couldn't wait..i peed my pants...
hahah.

so we started fantasizing about how we would be the only guys in the whole of M'sia who probably heard them before so it'll be an intimate gig between the trio and us.

things we were dreaming about at first:

getting Keith to hang around with us before the gig and have some beers

getting personal pix with them and their autographs and their personal bodyparts and whatnot

interviewing the band

then our worst fears were realised:

shitz.fm started playing them again and again and again. heh, what's new there?

my r&b-listening fwens started singing W.A.S songs

their videos start to appear on tv

advertisements of the gig flood the dailies

that's when we realised we probably shouldn't have dreamt that much and shall just go enjoy the show.
then when i e-mailed zouk to find out more about possible age restrictions due to Tiger being the sponsor of the event, my worst nightmare came to life:

the show was for ages 21 and above only!

but it's not everyday that a band like this comes M'sia, our music scene is sad as it is already, with visits by INXS and strippers-who-try-to-pass-themselves-off-as-singers.

so we decided to go buy tickets anyway..only RM60!! compare that to INXS and PCD's prices...madness.
*INXS ranges from RM62 to RM382!! haha, even for cheapest RM62 tickets, all you can see of the band is properly just dots on the stage from where you would stand..and I got to stand right in front of Keith Murray!! muahahaha

just several hours after getting my tickets from Rock Corner Midvalley, bing calls to tell me he just won 4 tickets to go in. GAH!!

ok, so we thought with the tickets won, they would surely let us in despite being underaged..i mean, they must let the contest winners in, right??

so on wednesday, after getting 2 full day's rest from college because of the bug, i hoped i was recovered and ready.
around 6plus, bing, his 2 sisters, gee and i got into a car all ready (dressed in what we perceived 21-yr-olds would wear) for the gig. the daily rush hour traffic jam was there and it took us more than an hour to get to this..lame man's excuse for piece of architecture.

arrived half an hour before the show was scheduled to start (which was 8). so we were loitering around the entrance, eye-ing the couple of top-heavy bouncers manning the gates every now and then as the crowd steadily grew. we could hear them inside playing some songs already!! heard This Scene Is Dead and Be My Baby..probably soundchecking.

anyway, this guy from Channel [V], JayP or sumting like that, from..remote control or sumting like that (i dunno, i don't watch those thingies). anyway, he was asking some guy some questions in front of the zouk entrance, which was right where we 5 anxious, worried minors were. the sad dude couldn't answer, so he pulled me in front of the camera and asked me instead...

he asked me what artiste to request a video of, so i just said we are scientists' nobody move, nobody get hurt. in retrospect, i regret not asking for a better video but hey, i didn't know what else to say, ok?? some stranger just pull you in front of the camera and ask you questions you sure shocked right??

so after that, JPee comes over and offers me one of 2 cd's to grab for answering the question:

i was like, shit.
gee asked me to just grab the 40-yr-old slut's one cos he already has click five...yeah, HE HAS CLICK FIVE...don't ask me why.

so around 8.30, people started entering, so we thought to just try our luck with the bouncers. ahead of us in the line, we saw people being turned away, presumably for being underaged or muslim (beer was served). when it was our turn, i tried to look old and just handed him my IC after being asked..he takes my IC, looks at it for a moment, then, get this, holds it up to his eyes to get a close look, and then waves me in!!!

AHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHH!!!
i was this freakin happy when i got in. no lah, i didn't actually laugh out loud like that. but i wanted to though. =p

they stamped some invisible glow-in-the-dark ink thing on our wrists, then we proceeded to collect our free beers and grabbed a seat. heh, we posed for this guys who wanted to take pix of us drinking Tiger beer.

after awhile, we went to the dancefloor in front of the stage before too many people came. there was this opening act by a local band, the deserters. they weren't bad.

sort of a muhibah band, i liked the drummer, he kept making crazy face expressions while playing. the guitarist's guitar strap gave way half way through the set and he had to kneel down and play, which was quite funny. anyway, i felt their set was probably 1 or 2 songs too long as the crowd was getting restless to see the band they came to see. so when W.A.S finally took the stage amidst triumphant cheers from the audience at 10.30, the party finally got started.

first thing i noticed, they were definitely skinnier than i expected....
wohoo!! skinny geeks shall inherit the earth!

i was standing right in front of Keith, which was all good but he kept blocking my view of Michael, which was kind of annoying.

i have to say, the sound set-up was poor depite the balls-bursting bass. Keith's lead guitar was too soft and had some problems with static. his pedal was giving problems too and we had to strain our ears at some part just to hear his guitar-riffs like the guitar solo part in Inaction which was ruined because of this.
overall volume was too loud though, or maybe i shouldn't have stood right next to the amplifiers. =p it was the only way to stand right in front of stage.

lead singer/guitarist keith was looking ~~hawt~~ great with the hair i've always wanted to have, his singing was fantastic, the band's playing was tight. anyway, the whole thing's sponsored by Tiger, so some bottles of beer were placed strategically on the stage for them to chug down between songs and i saw Michael take a sip before whipping out his own bottle of Jack Daniel's!

he never touched the Tiger after that.ahaha.

nothing compares to watching the real thing live

in between songs, keith and chris was making the crowd laugh with their witty exchanges about KFC grease as they traded blows making fun of each other, with chris being the easy target as keith taunted him about his love life. would have liked to hear michael talk though, he didn't say a word throughout.

expectedly, the crowd responded most to hits, Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt, It's A Hit, and Inaction.

the climax of the gig, the orgasm of the lovemaking, would probably be when they performed a cover of The Ronnettes' Be My Baby when Keith hopped on to the 7-ft amplifiers as he serenaded to the audience, after which he jumped into the crowd, right in front of me!!

the crowd went wild trying to get to him and molest him in a thousand and one places. all i did was ruffle his hair...twice....i ruffled his hair....twice!!

hahah, the crowd was trying to push past me as i tried to hold my ground and bing even reached his hand down keith's pocket looking for souvenirs!

he was out in the crowd for so long till a crew member (was that his green-eyed girlfriend?) had to come out and reclaim him.hahah. some guys who tried to get on stage in the process were duly shoved off.

the show ended on a high with an energetic performance of The Great Escape, with the crowd bobbing up and down and lots of pushing and shoving going on as some monkeys tried to make their way to the front, my glasses almost got knocked off twice.

alongside Starlight and City of Delusion, this is one of the songs on Black Holes & Relevations that leaves the deepest impression after first listen, IMHO. Now it's become one of my favourite Muse songs, and probably one of my all-time favourite music videos.

Epic is the most appropriate word to describe the song, but wacky is what best describes the video.

If you like kungfu stunts, horse-riding cowboys, laser blasters, holographic jukeboxes and hot blondes on unicorns, this will satisfy your weird-ass cravings.

The titular "Cydonia" refers to the region on Mars where some believe life has existed, and is the site of the infamous 'Face on Mars'. The cover artwork for "Black Holes and Revelations" is set on the surface of Mars, and is thought to be a reference to this region and the song. The four men sitting round the table have miniature horses in front of them, and as such are probably meant to be metaphorical 'knights of Cydonia'

anyway, the video heavily borrows certain movie influences...Bruce Lee, old westerns, Blade Runner (maybe?), Star Wars, The Matrix, Robin Hood..did you guys spot any else?

the jerseys have been unveiled..

honestly, i'm not really crazy about the red home kit..no revolutionary redesign there...but i really like the white/green european away jersey that Carra's wearing.

and the domestic away kit Xabi's wearing..it's an eye-blindingly bright yellow with a bit of red here and there..gorgeous!!
have to wait till september before they start selling 'em though..and that's for in the UK...not sure when (if it ever does) it'll arrive at our pirate-infested shores.

been looking for some clothes for Eleanor...don't dare to bring her to college for now...

don't like the idea of my baby girl walking around naked...all those prying eyes and grubby fingers on her..eugh.

the series of ads showing two guys each depicting a mac and a pc respectively. well, the mac guy in those ads was really pompous and this has spawned some spoofs created by pc users (that's like 90% of the computer-using population?). anyway, this one really made me laugh:

watched Pirates of The Carribean 2..verdict: entertaining overall, but draggy at some parts, Johnny Depp still rocks but I feel the 1st one (as with all other movies) is better.

The Cup Ends Tonight

amazing how i managed to go through an entire world cup month without so much as a mention of football in this blog..a month when even people who know nuts about football will talk football, play football, watch football, bet football, blog football..

well, the fact is when it comes to football for me, first and foremost, i'm a Liverpool man.

the only international side i'll go crazy about is our Malaysian team when we finally make it to the world cup..now that'll be the day, won't it..
till that happens (hope it happens in my lifetime), i'll never really get that excited about the world cup as a true football fan should be..

anyway, the team i was supporting through this finals, Espana, has already been kicked out early in the 2nd round despite a convincing group stage qualification (as usual). the team that sent them packing, Les Bleus, is in the final tonight so i hope they get a footballing lesson from the Azzurri later on.

and i'll be rooting for Andrea Pirlo later.

Pirlo plays deep in midfield, his style of play alot like Liverpool's very own Xabi Alonso (who totally rocked before spain got KO)..

i don't want to die in peace of old age. i want to get murdered..leave the world with a bang =p i hope to die young (around 65) cos i think being old is SO not fun.

the past couple of weeks of my term break cum world cup holidays have been enjoyably hectic..hah, i calculated, from friday morning till now, out of the last 32 hours i've managed to spend a grand total of 3 hours at home..hahah, the balance was spent hanging out with a friend who's about to leave soon, cc, futsal 1u class dinner, mamak for wcup, ~~sleeping over~~ (erm, ended up not sleeping at all) at yang's place, 5-hr undang course (where i caught up with lost sleep.=p) for my driving license.and supposed to play badminton somemore after i came back...hahah..

anyway, onto the title for this post, you might have seen this article on the front page of the Star several days back. concerning video footage of some secondary school girls in miri bullying another girl..all clad in uniform.

there's been alot of controversy surrounding the malaysian education system recently..the transparency (or rather, lack of it) in awarding of JPA scholarships by the government..the concern over our "brain drain" to foreign countries where our brightest young minds are snapped up by top foreign universities after being mysteriously declined their courses of choice at UM..and now this, actual video evidence of rampant bullying among students..

i've personally witnessed some bully cases when i was back in high school, but fortunately, have never been involved in one. anyway, most people turn a blind eye to this kind of stuff but in actual fact, we know it happens but we just keep quiet as long as it doesn't invovle ourselves...typical m'sian mentality!

this blog was about to die in peace before being suddenly awakened by a tag post from the pervert poet. anyway, i'll get to that later, memes require too much of thought and deliberation.havent used my brain for too long.

well, the main dilemma concerning this blog is i don't know what to blog about. not because of a lack of topics, but more because i don't know what topics to choose from.i could probably maintain a blog just concerning liverpool and football, but i like to write about music and movies too. and then there's the typical personal stuff.and then there's other interesting stuff i find on the net. so thanks to the overcrowding of ideas of topics, stupid as it sounds, i ended up not blogging instead.

i was pleasantly surprised to see the number of hits my blog was getting even when i wasn't updating, so after some encouragement from bing, i decided to start again, now with an all-new (orange, of course) layout!

got the template from blogskins.com after being impressed by roz's new layout.then edited and tweaked a lil' bit here and there to get what you see now. the title of this new(!) blog is inspired by none other than one of my first ever favourite bands, muse.

by the way, their new album, black holes and revelations is just out and their newest single, supermassive black hole, has been compared to (gasp!) britney spears!

i have only heard a few tracks from the new album but i personally feel it's a move backwards for muse. they've abandoned the customary piano-opera rock song eg. butterflies and hurricanes from absolution and went for more cheesy dance beats eg. britney (ARGGH!)

What a match, the best player in the world - Steven Gerrard created 1 and scored 2 to bring the match to 3-3 after 90 mins. Then, Reina does a Dudek by saving magnificently in extra time and saves 3 penalties to bring back memories of Istanbul. Unlike Henry or Ronaldinho in the Champs League Final, our best player rises to the occasion to lead the team once again to glory. Scoring 2 fantastic equalisers, especially that heart-stopping last-minute 35-yard screamer that brought us into extra time. After that I knew it was our final, with Reina an established penalty-saver back in Spain, he didn't dissapoint to give us one of the best FA Cup finals in history. Liverpool 3 - 3 West Ham (Liverpool win 3-1 on penalties)

Come to think of it, Liverpool has given the football world the best UEFA Cup final, Champions League final and now, the best FA Cup final in history.

2. 2001, when we won an unprecedented 5 trophies in 5 months.

The best UEFA Cup final in history, Markus Babbel and Stevie G put the Reds 2 up before Alaves pulled one back. Then, MOTM Gary McAllister converts a penalty won by Owen. 3-1.

Somehow, the Spaniards score 2 to equalise followed by another Liverpool goal, this time from Robbie Fowler to put Liverpool ahead once more. Again, Alaves didn't just lay down and die and scored their 3rd header of the match to make it 4-4 two minutes before the final whistle.

Then Smicer wins a free kick in extra time, McAllister drifts in a cross, headed into his own goal by Jelly (his name was something like that, I remember), Liverpool wins by Golden Goal. Liverpool 5 - 4 Alaves

3. 2005, who can forget that night in Istanbul.

AC Milan went 3-0 up, we hit back with 3 of our own, led by the Great Gerrard (who else?). Dudek dances during penalties and the rest, is history. 5 times European Champions, baby. Liverpool 3 - 3 AC Milan (Liverpool wins 3-2 on penalties)

Steven Gerrard was chosen by fellow players to win the PFA Player of the Year award. (about time)

Liverpool beat Chelsea courtesy of a lovely Lovely Luis Garcia goal.(again)
this means we'll be playing the Hammers at our 2nd home stadium - Cardiff's Millenium Stadium - for the FA Cup come May 13.

we got our 10th win in 10 games thanks to a wonderful brace from none other than the fantastic Stevie G. this makes us level on points with the mancs to keep up the pressure for 2nd place!

FA Cup champions and 2nd place, now that would be quite a satisfactory season with much more to look ahead to after the World Cup with new strikers and Mark Gonzales (3 goals in last 3 games on loan at Sociedad) coming in to Liverpool. and Fowler staying. of course

I just saw an ad for children cartoon shows being played on ntv7. the background music they chose was from Britpop band Supergrass. Though this Oxford 4-piece is considered rather pop-ish, it still sounds strangely uncomfortable to hear alternative music promoting Spongebob Squarepants.

This is just an example of the unwelcomed yet ultimately inevitable seeping of indie and altenative music into mainstream culture. Among other instances, the Dandy Warhols' "Bohemian Like You" was used as the background music for Vodafone's latest ad on Malaysian tv, following our very 1st home-made cell phone maker's ad which played Sigur Rós' oh-so-magical riff from "Hoppípolla".

Other than that, on Malaysian airwaves, with our radio stations infamously playing Billboard hits non-stop (excluding the notable exception of Red FM's Clash show), there's been a recent surge of indie bands making themselves heard, among them the Kaiser Chiefs and more recently, the Arctic Monkeys!!!

This heinous crime can partly be blamed on popular TV-series such as the hugely-popular O.C. which regularly uses indie/alt music in its shows.
Stupid show, dunno why so many people watch it. I mean, other than the fact that their actors are annoyingly attractive, there's nothing else to the show.

Underworld : Evolution

1st of all, this movie is stupid. 2ndly, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
If you live in the country I live in where Oscar-winning gay movies and movies about Israelis assasinating Palestinians are banned, you would know that the original Underworld was never shown in Malaysia.

I don't know how this sequel made it through our censorship board since it's filled with nothing but crap. yup, this movie is nothing but action, fighting, blood-sucking, killing and Kate Beckinsale. Which is also why you should go watch this movie if you love all of the above.

The whole movie is seemingly shot in perpetual darkness as it's about the neverending fight between vampires and lycans (geek term for werewolves). There's virtually no story-line so I'm not gonna waste my time on that. The 1st 20mins is kinda confusing with lots of references to chracters from the 1st movie, but once you realise that this movie is pointless, you'll begin to enjoy it.

The fight scenes between the wolves and vampires are way cool with lots of CGI effects. Oh yeah, and Kate Beckinsale is super-bloody-hot.

In a skin-tight leather suit throughout, she alone's probably worth paying the movie ticket for. The much hyped about love scene with the forgettable Scott Speedman where she takes off the leather suit for the only time in the movie was expectedly (and dissapointedly) cut off in Malaysian cinemas. Wonder how her husband-director Len Wiseman could stand there behind the camera watching his wife make love with another man. Overall, this movie is complete-mindless entertainment. Why I love this movie:

1. Kate Beckinale looks bloody hot in a leather suit.
2. Cool action scenes..especially the final one involving the big batman (can't remember the chracter's name) and the helicopter.
3. Kate Beckinsale is freakin-glass-melting-temperature hot.

V for Vendetta

caught the premiere of this movie on Thursday, and I just realised that it was the first time I ever saw a movie at Midvalley. =p

A very entertaining show, this was my first outing with college friends..another 1st =p

Based on a graphic novel, it stars Hugo Weaving (of Elrond and Agent Smith fame) as the terrorist-hero V. You won't get to see his face throughout the entire movie though. Set in a future London, where they is a curfew time, the government is ruled by a High Chancellor and the London Underground is shut-down, V tries to start a rebellion against the government with his freaky Guy Fawkes-mask on the whole time.

lots of knife kung fu action inspired by the Matrix's Wachowski brothers, lots of classical music (Tchaikovsky, me thinks?), and lots of the alphabet V (it gets sickening at some point) throughout the entire movie.

The graphic novellist who started it all, Alan Moore thinks it is shit, and even had his vendetta against V for Vendetta printed all over the NY Times.

I THINK it's a must-watch, you get to see the British Parliament Building get blown up (yea, Big Ben included), you get to see Natalie Portman bald, and by the end of the show, you can add a significant number of words that start with the letter V to your vocabulary.

Went shopping at The Curve today and bought shoes and some books. On the way home, Dad had to take a u-turn to head back to PJ, and after the turn, lo and behold, were a group of traffic policemen who had "set up shop" there.

Traffic police are smart nowadays, they wait at u-turns under flyovers coz you have to slow your car down and you would be surprised and unprepared for them. Surprised and unprepared was my father as he desperately tried to sling the unused seat belt over his arm. It was too late anyway, he had already been spotted, and the Men In White gesticulated for him to stop. This guy who had an Anti Rasuah badge on his shiny white uniform walked up to the car:

Anti-rasuah policeman (ARP) : (points at seatbelt) apa ni?

Dad (D) : Eh? (phony astonished look on face) tak pakai properly arh.

ARP : tengok driving license.

D : (rummages in wallet, hands card to ARP)

ARP : eh, ini kad tnb la. u kerja tnb?

Dad had accidentally (i think), handed his tnb staff card instead.

D : sorry, sorry wrong card. ya, tnb. (continues looking in wallet)

i'm worried though about my piano theory exam tomorrow. it's in dj in the morning so i don't think i'll be at tmn sea on time. the thing is, i'm almost sure of at least getting a merit, but £50 is awarded to ppl who get distinction and i don't mind an extra RM350 in my pocket. it's not fun to be sitting for an exam and collecting results for another exam on the very same day you know.

anyway, hope tomorrow goes well for me in both.

one step at a time

Another long overdue post thanks to non-stop tests and whatnot...Last Sunday, Thiam Beng, Sueh Lung, yang, Brian and I took part in the KL International Marathon. That's nothing new..but this year, instead of joining the 7km run, i signed up for the half-marathon..

First off, I don't know how I let yang persuade me into running 3 times what I usually run, and more than double my longest run. And add that to the fact that the last time i ran before that was A-G-E-S ago. Best of all, we played 2-hrs of futsal the previous day, so my legs were aching before the run even started! In that moment of folly, i already paid yang 30 bucks, so I thought, what the heck.

Thiam Beng and Sueh Lung joined the full marathon, (that's bloody 42 kilo m's btw) and my hat's off to them for finishing within the 6-hr qualifying mark. Reached there around 5am I think but there was already a throng of runners gearing up for the marathon. I failed to spot kennysia among all the bald africans and chinese women who looked like men.

So, yang, brian and I started off rather well, reaching the 10km mark in 1hr10mins but what was bloody annoying was, the 1st 3 refreshment stations we reached were already out of drinks..We pay 30bucks and they can't even make sure they have enough for all the runners?!?!
Anyway, I ran with yang for the first 15 km or so till my body finally gave in. My legs just refused to move any faster than a slow ~~jog~~ stroll. Best part is, within 2 km of the finishing line, I decided to force myself to run again and just at that moment, the worst cramps I ever felt in my life attacked both my poor legs. I was momentarily paralysed waist down as I staggered to the sidewalk to sit down. A kind stranger stopped by to ask if I was OK and helped me stretch my legs. The lady runner was really helpful and I was up and ~~running~~ walking within minutes. So anyway, I managed to finish the whole 21km, but failed to break the 3hr mark by 6 minutes which means I don't get a cert!!

GAAAHHH!! really really regret not pushing myself more but i got a lovely medal in the end anyway. Definitely better than all the previous ones i got.

What's so fun about putting your body under physical torment for 3 hours on a Sunday morning? you say. Well, it's the personal satisfaction you get at the end of every run knowing you made it becaused you persevered and pushed yourself to the limit just to get to the finishing line.

I finished in 1111st position according to the chip system. among the last few of the finishers.
Embarassed? no.
Dissapointed? yesh. but I'll definitely give 21k another try some other time.

Walk The Line

Finally watched it last weekend, been waiting for its release here ever since it opened in November in every freaking corner of the Earth except Malaysia. For those in the dark, Walk The Line is a musical biopic of The Man In Black - the late, great, Johnny Cash.

So I called GSC (TGV's not showing it for god knows what reason), to book the tickets beforehand, and guess what, this epic biography which won 3 Golden Globes and is in the running for 5 Academy Awards is classified under "other English movies"...
?!?! even bloody big black momma's house comes before that.

The cineplex was at most an 8th filled, which is really just sad. On to the movie, Joaquin Phoenix totally kicks ass with his brilliant portrayal of warm friend Johnny and his alter ego/stage personality Cash. The chemistry between June Carter (played by Reese Witherspoon) and Johnny Cash is thoroughly compelling, with both actors giving Oscar-calibre performances to own their roles without fear. This movie is more than just a biography of one of the greatest country and blues songwriters, it is a love story which is all the more engaging because it's true.

If you enjoy country music, you'll love this movie. Heck, if you like any type of music, you'll still love it anyway. The movie is filled with lots of Cash classics impressively performed and sung by Phoenix and Witherspoon themselves. Phoenix learnt the guitar and totally immersed himself in Cash's work just so that he could play the part to perfection, totally deserving the Oscar IMHO. Witherspoon's angelic voice was soulful, and her southern country accent was lovably believable. There's even a brief cameo appearance by Tyler Hilton as The King himself-Elvis Presley.

GO WATCH THIS MOVIE!!! Like, NOW!!!!
Rotten Tomatoes gave it 84%, I give it a 9/10. It'll be the best RM10 you ever spent.

1st FA Cup win over MU in 85 years but it was well-deserved..Crouch expertly crouching (excuse the pun) to head Finnan's cross in off both posts..it was the 2nd Liverpool-ManU match in a month and the difference this time was, the better team won. Gary Neville was inevitably booed and jeered at everytime he touched the ball thanks to his "celebration" at Old Trafford the last time and some jerk even threw a half-eaten burger at him when he went to the side-lines to take a throw-in. Kewell and Riise dominated the left flank in the 1st half and played well throughout. Hamann was my man-of-the-match though, effective in midfield breaking up the mancs' play the whole 90 minutes in the absence of Alonso..went to mamak with Log to watch the match, caught up a bit with each other..

Late in the match, the Reds got a free-kick about 40-yards from goal and as Riise lined up to smash the ball, Smith rushed out to block his shot, landing awkwardly on the ground..the medics were called on and he had to wear an oxygen mask and van Nistelrooy even turned away with a constipated look on his face...turned out he broke his leg and dislocated his ankle..whoa, i knew Riise's left shot is packed with a punch but i didn't know it could be that chun..ahah..Smith's world cup hopes are seemingly now over...erm, my sincere condolences goes out to him..though honestly i don't think he would make it into the england 1st 11 anyway..

read this in the star today..about the crooked or "scenic" bridge Malaysia was going to go ahead and build connecting to the existing causeway..a stupid waste of money all thanks to our neighbour's reluctance in building a proper bridge across the Tebrau Straits to replace the ancient causeway.

First of all, the causeway is not big enough to accomodate the increasing amount of traffic between the 2 countries daily. Other than that, the causeway is NOT A BRIDGE, meaning it's just a highway across the sea on a stretch of land man-made by filling rocks and concrete. In other words, the sea water in the straits is stagnant which means we get to see all that floating rubbish thrown into the sea by the typical Malaysian and visiting Singaporean.

It seems that Singapore will only build their half of the bridge if we agree to their blasphemous request for sand and our airspace.

The BRIT Awards, or more commonly known as the Brits, following hotly on the heels of the recently concluded Grammys, saw the Kaiser Chiefs going home with 3 awards out of 5 nominations they garnered while Coldplay, James Blunt, and Green Day each bagged 2 Brits. Personal fav's Arcade Fire & Franz Ferdinand got 3 nominations respectively but both went home empty-handed. Arcade Fire losing to Green Day & Jack Johnson while FF lost out to the chiefs in all 3 categories they were nominated in.. not happy, but not dissatisfied either, so can't complain about the winners.

speaking of Franz Ferdinand, they performed in Singapore last nite. yoongbing went. my bro went. half of singapore went. (well, at least the cool kids).
my bro aredi told me he got tickets when he was back here during CNY, then a few days later, yb told me he got them too..jealous?? hmm..considering i knew all the lyrics by heart within a week of getting You Could Have It So Much Better, hell yeah, i was jealous..WAS..i've more or less gotten over it now, that's why i never posted about it the last couple of weeks..anyway, i had to miss 10 hours of classes if i were to make it for the gig and the only way i could get out of that is if HELP burned down and S$88 magically materialised in my wallet and my mother had so bad a headache from work she didn't realise i was gone for 2days....

*sigh* just hope i get to watch a FF concert before my time is up...think i'll add that to my list on 43 things.

I took a slightly different route on my walk home today and saw a sign i never realised before:

imagine parang-brandishing MPPJ officers knocking on your front door one morning for that piece of tissue you chucked into the drain last week thinking no one was looking.

just realised it was Grammy night a couple of days ago. i stopped following this award show ever since i stopped listening to radio. Well, coz it's become an award for any artiste whose single is most repeatedly played to boredom on the airwaves.

Anyway, i was happy nonetheless to find out in today's papers that Mariah Carey only grabbed 3 out of 8 nominations she garnered while patrick's fav U2 was the big winner of the night, taking home 5 Glistening Golden Gramaphones for the 5 categories they were nominated in. I'm not a big fan of Bono & co. but they beat Mariah Carey on my list anyday. Kanye West got 3 as well, while kin ming's future wife bagged 2 awards.

The only category i actually cared about - Best Alternative Music Album was expectedly and rather dissapointingly won by The White Stripes..not that i don't like them. Jack White is one of my all-time favourite songwriters. But it goes to show that even in a supposingly 'Alternative' category, the most mainstream act got the award.
The fact is that among the nominees -- Arcade Fire, Beck, Death Cab For Cutie, Franz Ferdinand & White Stripes -- most radio-listening, mtv-watching people probably only heard white stripes before and some probably heard of death cab, ff, and beck, thus the obvious winner..

was kinda hoping the brilliant musical geniuses of arcade fire would finally be recognised even though Funeral was actually out the year before. alas, music is still controlled by radio & mtv and until that changes, great music like Arcade Fire's will sadly be underappreciated. give it a try,

okay, been a long time since i last posted..so here's a brief summary of what i've been doing the past week or so..left for melaka on saturday then headed on to jb for CNY celebrations...the usual stuff, loud talking and laughing, eating cookies, playing with fireworks, eating more CNY tid-bits, gambling a lil' just for fun..nothing i don't usually do during CNY..well, the only difference was i managed not to lose any money while gambling this time..=p and my pretty lil' niece is now 3 years old and getting prettier by the day..forgot to bring my cam down so didnt take any pics...GAH..

finally finished catcher in the rye. supposed to be quite good but i didn't really enjoy it..the narrator in the story, Holden Caufield's a cynical hypocrite and half the story is about him discovering new "phonies" at every corner..the plot, IMHO heads nowhere but at least his blog-like narration makes it less boring.

on to football, transfer window's just concluded, with Liverpool's major signings being Jan Kromkamp, Daniel Agger, and Robbie Fowler, of which the latter's homecoming dominated headlines all over Merseyside.

dissapointing draw with birmingham. if benitez has a bogey team, its gotta be them, with 2 draws and 2 losses to them in the past 2 seasons. anyway, it wasnt that bad with chelski, the mancs, spurs and arsenal-the goners all dropping points..the devils remain consistently inconsistent, losing to blackburn (again) which means we're now only 3 pts behind them with 2 games in hand. =] next up, chelski. but more on that later..gotta start on h/w, been procrastinating way too much..

from The Star, a group of 4 students who have nothing better to do decided to sue the government for teaching maths & science in english..according to these 4 jokers, they're the "victims" of this change as it "deprived them of learning the two subjects in the national language".

They were complaining that while chinese primary school students have the luxury of extremely enjoyable extra work of studying these two subjects in both english and chinese, they only had to learn it in english, which is why they had so much free time to file a suit against the government in the first place..

in other words, they think its unfair chinese primary students have so much homework so they decided they wanted to join them in having a memorable childhood filled with homework and pointless tuition classes..idiots..

On the stroke of midnight tonight, Liverpool pay a visit to Manchester City's inferior neighbours in a match that might ultimately decide who gets to be runners-up....behind Chelsea, duh.. anywayz, liverpool won't have luis garcia, while scholes, ronaldo, and park will all miss the match for the mancs. another possible absentee is "central midfielder" alan smith.
though he's nowhere near as good as sissoko or alonso..or hamann for that matter, i'm hoping he'll fail his late fitness test coz i think liverpool will be more rampant in midfield if o'shea and fletcher remains as their central players in the middle of the park..

The One Earth Concert, another one of those concerts organized by rockers who either actually care about the world, or are plain desperate for publicity. or both.

well, this concert which currently has Manic Street Preachers, The Strokes, The Darkness, Embrace, Elbow, & Super Furry Animals onboard is supposed to raise awareness about climate change among the general public. to be honest, i don't understand why musicians spend so much time on stuff like this...live 8, anyone? well, last i remembered, politicians from the developed countries still don't give a damn about africa, so i think musicians should go back to what they do best..make music, while politicians can go back to doing "important-politician-stuff" , such as organizing tea parties.

poverty's still everywhere, and so is war...including this little war of words between 2 of my favourite bands..sigh..don't people ever learn that nobody wins in a war?just hope kapranos and liam stops this childish bickering.

Maximo Park, 5 guys from Newcastle who write some good music. i know i'm no music critic, but it's impossible not to love apply some pressure.

yup, it is official, i'm giving blogging another go, considering my last attempt was a complete failure (3 entries in 4 years) =p

realised a lot of people having blogs nowadays, (e.g : kin ming, eman) and alot more popping up now school's over (e.g : huey-in,and this ridiculous one courtesy of yang...it's a good way to keep in touch i guess..

coming to terms with the fact that we're not goin back to school anymore, well unless you consider college school..today wasn't so bad..didn't have to wait one and a half hours for the bladi bus..in fact, sook teng and i arrived perfectly on time with the bus right there once we came out..=]
